Many Americans can have groceries delivered to their door at the swipe of an app. But for others, access to fresh and healthy food is not as simple. In low-income communities, convenience stores offer few healthy food choices. Healthier options available at grocery stores or farmers markets aren’t easy to access.
Many Atlanta neighborhoods lack access to quality food at affordable prices. Some of our communities suffer the ill effects of food insecurity and generational poverty, both of which disproportionately affect minority and low-income families. These problems create dire long-term consequences for residents and health systems.
Increased rates of obesity, diabetes, and chronic illness correlate with lack of healthy food access. Food security is not simply a health issue. It is a community development and equity issue. For this reason, access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food is a key component of a healthy, sustainable community.
